Happy Earth Day History 2018: Ever marvel how Earth Day begun? This celebration arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental problem.

In 1970, San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson individually asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration. McConnell selects the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose April 22.

Millions of people join, and today Earth Day continues to be widely commemorated with events on both dates. The most common practice of the commemoration is to plant new trees for Earth Day.

Earth Day is an annual event made to commemorate the planet’s environment and increase public awareness about pollution. The day, marked on April 22, is noticed worldwide with rallies, meeting, outdoor activities and service projects.

Started as a grassroots movement, Earth Day made public help for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and donated to the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act and some other environmental laws. The plan for Earth Day was suggested by then-Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who died in 2005.

The environmental recommendation group Earth Day Network (EDN) has connected forces with the March for Science to arrange a rally on the national mall in Washington, D.C. “The day’s program will contain speeches and practice with scientists and civic organizers, musical performances and a march through the way of Washington, D.C.”

Earth Day was first commemorated on April 22, 1970. Established by Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator, it’s based on anti-Vietnam War manifestation that he witnessed on college campuses.

These manifestations or teach-ins were arranged to educate people about the war. Nelson sought to utilize the same principles to educate society about the environment. Over 20 million people joined in the first Earth Day with different activities, several of which took place in elementary schools and universities.

Even Congress adjourned for the day to permit congressional representatives to attend the Earth Day activities in their region. In some years the entire world was commemorating an entire week of activities leading up to Earth Day.

EARTH DAY NAMESAKE

It was named by some people, including Senator Nelson’s friend Julian Koenig, whose birthday was coincidentally April 22. He thought that because Earth Day rhymed with birthday it was a natural name for the event.

Ever wonder why Earth Day is commemorated on April 22? Nelson determined on April 22 since he felt it would increase participation by college students. Later all, the week of April 22 did not fall through the exams, Spring Break, or conflict with Easter, Passover, or any other religious festivity.
