Various martyrdom stories are related to the events of 14th February. Many old time Christian martyrs were named as Valentine, but the ones honored on the 14th February every year are Valentine of Terni and Valentine of Rome. The Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome martyred in 269.
He was then buried on the Via Flaminia and his martyrdom was added to the saint calendar in 496 by Pope Galerius. Saint Valentine’s souvenir were kept at the Church and the underground tunnels (where the dead bodies were buried as in ancient Rome) of San Valentino in Rome.
The place was since then considered as an important pilgrim during the middle ages. His souvenirs were then shifted to the church of Santa Prassede at the time of papacy of Nicholas IV. Saint Valentine’s skull is now flower-crowned and showcased in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome.
